What breed of dog is Adam?
Adam is a small mixed breed dog – we think he is a Schnoodle –
part Schnauzer, and part Poodle.
How old is Adam?
Adam is 7 years old.
How big is he? How much does he weigh?
Adam is a lean 17lbs with long
legs.
When did Adam join your family?
On September 25th 2004 my husband, Chris, and I were in our apartment
cheering on our beloved Hokies for the Virginia Tech vs NC State football game.
although disappointed VT lost the game 16-17 –both Chris and I were excited
because we were scheduled to pick up our foster dog from the Atlanta Pet
Rescue.
When we arrived at Atlanta Pet Rescue, we mingled with all the cute puppies
and thought it would be hard to pick out which dog to foster for the weekend. We
found one of the volunteers who had our pre-approved foster parent application
with a foster dog assigned to us already.
The volunteer shouted “the Carters are here, bring out Newt!”. Upon the
announcement, a scrawny black dog with a long beard and unruly eyebrows that
were so long they fell into his eyes, trotted out from behind the table to meet us.
Chris looked at me and smiled as he scooped our little foster pup in his arms. On
our car ride home, our foster pup sat politely on my lap, and laid his head on my
shoulder. We discussed new names and came up with Adam – since we already
had an Eve in the family. Once Adam arrived at his new home, he enjoyed a
Spa bath, and haircut which made him quite a handsome guy. We officially
adopted Adam the following week.
What was Adam like as a puppy?
We adopted Adam when he was about 1 year old and loved to play with his
soccer ball squeaky toy. He is also a great jumper, and can leap 3.5 feet in the
air.
What activities does Adam enjoy?
Adam still loves to play – especially with toys that squeak. We live in Florida and
he enjoys sunning himself. He will lounge outside by the pool and when it gets
too hot, tap on the sliding glass door with his paw to let us know he wants in. If
you mention the words “outside” or “walk” you better mean it. He loves walking
around the neighborhood, and playing with his neighbor Bali.
Tell us about some of Adam's funny or endearing personality traits.
Adam loves to cuddle, and if sees an open lap, he’ll jump up. He loves to be
petted, and snuggled. Adam is a picky eater, but if I sprinkle parmesan cheese
on his food, he will gobble it down. His favorite food is Grandmas Macaroni. If
you scruff up his hair, he will take his front paws and comb it down.
Tell us about Adam's 4 legged family.
Sister - Liz, an English Pointer who joined our family a few months ago from a
rescue group.
Sister - Eve, a Rottweiler/Belgian Sheppard mix who lives in NY with
her “grandparents”.
Cousin – Trixie, a bulldog who lives in NY.
Cousin – Mugsy, a sheltie, poodle, cocker spaniel mix who lives in NY also.
When was Adam diagnosed?
May 19th, 2011
What was the diagnosis?
Lymphoma Stage II a – we will know type B or type T next week.
When did Adam start chemo?
May 19th, 2011
When does chemo end?
Adam is on the Madison Wisconsin Chemo protocol which lasts approximately 6
months. As of today (6/2/11) he completed round 3 of 25 treatments.
When does he check-in to NCSU?
When Adam achieves remission through Chemotherapy, we hope to have him checked in at NC State ASAP. For now, there is a 3 month wait.
When did you decide to admit Adam into the bone marrow transplant unit at NC State?
I began researching options for saving Adam’s life and found an article on
www.vetlearn.com that was published in Compendium Magazine. This article
was published in 2008 and discussed ground breaking procedures soon to
be offered at NC State. Upon further investigation, I contacted the NC State Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

Adam had another post transplant visit with AVS and is doing very well and still in remission! His white blood cell count is on the rise, and so are his platelets! Adam has the OK to start playing (but nothing too crazy). Here is Adam playing with his new squeaky toy "Rose the bulldog" that he got from his Aunt Deb. |

| Adam had his 4th post transplant checkup Monday and it appears that Adam's white blood cell count is still low, and not going up as the doctors woud like. He is feeling well, and wants to play and go for walks but he's still on bed rest. He is on antibiotics for the next few weeks and has another appointment Monday. |
Most Sincerely,

| Adam’s 3 week checkup showed he’s gained another half pound since his transplant. He is in good spirits, but still has a low platelet and white blood cell count – so he is still on bed rest. Since he has low volume of blood in his system, he is often chilly so we’ve been dressing him. He’s acquiring quite the wardrobe and may be time for a fall fashion show. |
Most Sincerely,
Adam's Parents - Chris & Rose

| Adam went for his second post bone marrow transplant checkup today and he is doing well. His white blood cell and platelet counts are still low so he will remain on bed rest for now. Because of his low blood volume, he's been a bit chilly so I've been dressing him in sweaters. He's currently sun bathing in the dining room staying toasty |
Most Sincerely,
Adam's Parents - Chris & Rose

Adam has returned to Florida from NC State and is doing well after his bone marrow transplant. He is on 2 weeks bed rest, and is sleeping a bunch.
We are so happy to have him home and grateful to Dr. Suter, Dr. Warry, Buffy and the rest of the team at NC State for taking such great care of our Adam
Most Sincerely,
Adam's Parents - Chris & Rose
Update from Adam's family: " Adam held steady yesterday, eating, sleeping, but no increase in his white blood cells. His platelet count had dropped and he was moved from isolation to ICU. He received a blood transfusion to help with the low blood platelet count. We are eagerly awaiting his neutrophil count to grow and to see a rise in his platelet production. Adam received an ECG which revealed a heart murmur which should not affect his cancer treatment. This picture shows Adam “overseeing” the application of the ECG pads. We miss out little guy and hope he can come home soon. " Please visit Adam's Facebook page today! |

Update from Adam's family: " The radiation treatment has done its job and Adam’s neutrophil count dropped to zero yesterday. Now it is time for his body to begin producing brand new (cancer free) neutrophils. As of this morning, Adam had 1 new neutrophil (white blood cell)! It is important that his body begin producing these cells because it indicates his body has accepted the bone marrow transplant. Please keep Adam in your thoughts as we hope to see a jump in Adam’s white blood cell count over the next few days. Here is a picture of Adam in the NC State Veterinary Hospital’s reverse isolation chamber designed to protect him from acquiring serious infections while his body has no immune defense. Reverse isolation provides HEPA filtered air into his room reducing incidence of him contacting diseases. Chris and I really miss our little boy and want him well again.
